Bookmarks are priceless. It takes years and long research to maintain a list of it. I expected Foxmarks to be foolproof. I was confident that even if I have another computer crash I won’t experience losing precious links on bookmarks because I have Foxmarks. I was very contented with the way Foxmarks had synchronized bookmarks from my two computers until today.
I was surprised to see that 414 of my bookmarks were replaced by only 3. Argh….. I cried….. I did not expect this to happen and I was not able to create a back up for bookmarks. I spent the whole 4 hours of my time trying to figure out what to do and how to get those precious links back. I asked my friend John to help and he sent me links to read about Firefox and losing bookmarks. Oh God I can’t concentrate reading and cannot understand a thing when my beauty is on panic mode!
I accessed my account at Foxmarks and saw that we are allowed to retrieve bookmarks. The only problem is that everything is coded. I clicked on at least three codes on dates that I estimated had the most complete bookmarks and great…. Just great…. It didn’t work out! I tried it thrice and it has been loading for more than an hour. My world seems to fall apart. After an agreement with John that he will help look for it in my computer using logmein, the explore and restore seemed to work magically. It did not update immediately though but it was still a good thing I had Foxmarks.
Firefox users have this kind of problem. This I gathered from research. It is like a Firefox bug or something that your list of hundreds bookmarks could get replaced by only 1 or 2 bookmarks at most. Well you definitely have a Firefox option if you are not using Foxmarks. Don’t you know that Firefox creates backups of your bookmarks? This is located in your Firefox profile folder.
Inside your Firefox profile folder is a subfolder called “bookmarkbackups”. Look for the bookmarks.html in the Firefox profile folder. There is a good probability you can get your bookmarks back if you are able to do this. You should know that Firefox generates its bookmark backup daily. Delete the file and replace it with the latest backup. Make sure you rename the backup to bookmarks.html first so Firefox is able to recognize it.
Another good way to do it is to open the run prompt in Windows. Close your Firefox first before doing this. Type firefox.exe-profilemanager. This will open the Firefox profile manager. There is a good possibility you are going to see more than one profile. Load the default profile first. Check if your bookmarks are back. If you are the only user of your computer then you may delete the other profile. For bookmarks backup, you may use your Google bookmarks. You can import your Firefox bookmarks by the click of a mouse. I just did that and I am contented and happy now.
